This was the first scheme undertaken by R&W for the Highways England Area 2 ASC team. We helped to combat problems posed by thaumasite erosion of the overbridge and foundations.
The initial challenge was to undertake a deep excavation with restricted head room and install the temporary works cofferdam.
The second stage involved concrete testing and hydro demolition in challenging working conditions. Once the new base foundation was poured, the bridge deck was propped to allow further removal of concrete from the supporting piers.
The piers were then reformed and, once cured, the propping was removed and the area reinstated to its original profile. The challenge here was the installation of the load spreading header beams.
By working closely with our supply-chain partners, a complex cantilevered scaffold was successfully installed and the beams were lifted into place.
