Handlebar Cafe – SpudYOUTH charity

It’s been just over a year since we first started talks with the charity spudYOUTH to help them deliver the Handlebar Café – which will be located on an old railway track at the bottom of St Catherine’s Hill, along one of the best cycle routes in Winchester.

As part of R&W’s Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) commitment, we offered to help the charity run a power supply to the new cafe. Their initial proposal involved digging along the carriageway from some local houses, but after some site meetings R&W altered the route to avoid local services and cause less disruption to local residents. To do this trial holes were carried out to determine the cover over a local bridge and in collaboration with SSE (Scottish and Southern Energy) the new route was agreed. R&W Environmental also kindly supplied Type 1 material along with a 3t excavator and a muckaway lorry.

When complete it will provide:

  • Employment opportunities for long-term unemployed people.
  • 300 bike hires per year.
  • Revenue and sustainability for spudYOUTH workshops which engage over 70 hard to reach young people per year.
  • Training for young people in food prep, hospitality and bike maintenance.
  • Refreshments for 23,000 customers per year sourced from local ethical companies.
  • 140 free architecture workshops for up to 20 young people at a time, per year.
  • Increased levels of cycling within the Winchester community and related health improvements.
  • Bike tours and maintenance.
  • Promotion of health, wellbeing and fitness.
  • A reduction in carbon emissions due to increased levels of cycling supporting the All Party Parliamentary Cycling Group calling for 10% of all journeys in Britain to be by bike by 2025.
  • A reduction in social isolation for teenagers living on rural communities.
