We are committed to making a positive impact by increasing the sustainability of our operations and – where possible – our industry, and by supporting the communities we work within. Our approach to working sustainably encompasses three elements: economy, community and environment.
Economy: wherever possible, our work with clients includes early involvement so that we can develop best value solutions and save them money
Community: our teams work with local stakeholders and charities to ensure the work we deliver has a positive impact on the communities we work within
Environment: we have invested not only in our own plant and fleet, but also in innovative environmental facilities.
Our drive for environmental sustainability is best demonstrated by our waste recycling plants. Through them we reduce waste sent to landfill and provide long-term sustainability benefits to our customers. We also supply data for environmental performance indicators for R&W and our clients.
Current activities include:
• Diverting of 7,500 tonnes of wet waste from landfill per year
• Reprocessing 60,000 tonnes of highways waste per year which is then reused in highway construction
• Reducing emissions by removing the need for additional lorry movements
• Recycling topsoil and aggregates
• Recycling water
• Generating significant cost savings for R&W and our clients
All our business activities adhere, as a minimum, to the ISO 14001 environmental standard. Our sustainability objectives and actions (such as using clean fuels and green vehicles; efficiently managing our fleet; reducing our carbon footprint; minimising office waste; increasing office recycling; and caring for the natural environments in which we operate) are met and carried out with the help of R&W’s Health, Safety and Environment team and are promoted through our environmental procedures and processes.
